About

Erika Sugarmon is a dedicated public servant and educator who was elected to represent District 12 on the Shelby County Board of Commissioners in August 2022. With a passion for empowering the community, she has been a driving force behind initiatives aimed at addressing mental health and public safety concerns in the county.

Sugarmon has been a vocal advocate for the establishment of a new inmate mental health facility, recognizing the urgent need to provide comprehensive support and rehabilitation services for individuals struggling with mental illness within the criminal justice system. Her efforts have included sponsoring resolutions to allocate funding for feasibility studies, site acquisition, and architectural design, as well as leading a delegation to study successful models like the Davidson County Residential Drug Court and Behavioral Care Center.

Committed to reducing recidivism and promoting overall well-being, Sugarmon believes that addressing mental health issues is crucial in tackling crime and ensuring public safety.[5] Her approach emphasizes a holistic and compassionate approach, focusing on treatment plans and support systems rather than solely punitive measures.

Beyond her work on mental health initiatives, Sugarmon is dedicated to serving the constituents of District 12 and advocating for their needs and concerns. As an educator, she brings a unique perspective and understanding of the importance of investing in the community's youth and creating opportunities for their empowerment and success.

With her unwavering commitment to public service and her collaborative approach, Erika Sugarmon continues to be a driving force for positive change in Shelby County, working tirelessly to create a safer, more equitable, and more compassionate community for all.
