The Frayser community is reeling from the tragic loss of an 8-year-old girl who collapsed and passed away while playing on the playground at Libertas School of Memphis on Monday, February 17, 2025. The second grader, whose name has not been released, was engaging in routine play when she suddenly collapsed. Despite the swift response of school staff and paramedics, she was later pronounced dead at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital.
Bob Nardo, executive director of Libertas School, stated that the collapse appeared to be caused by internal medical reasons and not due to any injury sustained at school. "Several staff members rushed to her side and provided care, while paramedics arrived within minutes to transport her to the hospital," Nardo explained. He also emphasized the importance of respecting the family’s privacy during this devastating time and assured that counseling resources would be available for students and staff as they process this loss.
Memphis Police are investigating the incident but have reported no immediate signs of foul play. The cause of death remains under review as authorities work to determine what led to this tragedy.
In response to this heartbreaking event, Commissioner Charlie Caswell of District 6, whose child attends Libertas School, has partnered with Commissioner Henri E. Brooks of District 7—the district where Libertas is located—to offer support to the grieving family, as well as the teachers and students affected by this loss. Together with members of the Wraparound District 6 program, they are working to provide resources and assistance during this difficult time.
Commissioner Caswell shared his condolences:
"On behalf of the men and women serving Wraparound District 6, we extend our deepest sympathies to the family and community mourning this tragic loss. This event reminds us all to come together and support one another in times of unimaginable grief."
Commissioner Henri E. Brooks also expressed her commitment to supporting families in District 7 during this time:
"As a representative of District 7, my heart goes out to this young girl’s family and everyone impacted by this tragedy. We are committed to ensuring that our schools and communities remain strong by providing resources and emotional support for those in need."
Commissioner Brooks has long been an advocate for equitable community development and family support in District 7. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to fostering safe environments where children can thrive.
This tragedy has left many in Frayser grieving while rallying around the young girl’s family. Libertas School is preparing counseling services for its students and staff, while Commissioners Caswell and Brooks are urging the community to come together in solidarity.
The loss of such a young life is a painful reminder of how precious every moment is with our children. As investigations continue, Frayser remains united in mourning while striving to honor her memory through hope, healing, and collective strength.
