Long-suffering is a powerful and often overlooked quality that helps children build strength, patience, and faith through life’s challenges. It is the ability to endure hard times and difficulties without giving up or losing hope—a trait deeply rooted in Biblical teaching and essential for growing character that lasts.
Why Long-Suffering Matters
Long-suffering means having patience and perseverance when things are tough. It helps us remain calm and steadfast during challenges, whether at school, at home, or with friends. The Bible holds long-suffering in high regard, showing us that enduring hardships can lead to great spiritual growth and blessing.
One of the key scriptures about this quality comes from Galatians 5:22-23, which lists long-suffering as part of the fruit of the Spirit:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness...” (Galatians 5:22)
Another powerful example is found in James 1:2-4:
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
These verses teach children that waiting patiently and enduring difficulties helps them grow stronger in faith and in life.
How to Teach Long-Suffering at Every Age
For Young Children (Ages 3–7):
Use simple stories and examples about waiting patiently—like waiting for a turn or for a favorite toy. Praise them when they show patience, explaining that waiting helps us build our strength, just like training muscles. Use a Bible story with patience, like the story of Job or Noah.
For Elementary Kids (Ages 8–12):
Help them understand that sometimes life isn’t easy, but God wants us to keep going no matter what. Discuss real-life challenges (like practicing a sport or learning a new skill) and how sticking with it teaches long-suffering. Read James 1:2-4 together and talk about how hardships help faith grow stronger.
For Teens (Ages 13+):
Encourage teens to reflect on personal struggles they’ve overcome and how patience and endurance played a part. Challenge them to see difficulties as opportunities for spiritual growth and maturity. Discuss biblical figures who exemplify long-suffering, such as Apostle Paul or Jesus Christ, who endured suffering for a greater purpose.
A Lifelong Treasure
Long-suffering is not just about enduring—it’s about hopeful endurance, trusting God’s timing and plan. Teaching kids this quality equips them to face life’s ups and downs with courage and faith, preparing them to be resilient adults who can tackle challenges with grace.
Spread the Word
Parents, grandparents, and caregivers can use this week to focus on building long-suffering by modeling patience themselves, praying with children for endurance, and sharing stories of faith that highlight the rewards of steadfastness.
Together, let’s nurture long-suffering in our #BeAmazing kids—helping them grow not just in patience, but in character that shines through every trial.
