Welcome to another Friday edition of “Growing Greatness,” where we help parents and grandparents inspire #BeAmazing kids! This week, we’re exploring a value that brings out the best in every child: Wholeheartedness.

Why Wholeheartedness Matters

Wholeheartedness is about giving your best effort, showing up with courage, and living with authenticity. It means trying—even when things are hard—and embracing both successes and failures as part of the journey. In a world that often celebrates perfection, wholeheartedness reminds us that what matters most is showing up with our whole selves, not just our achievements.

The Bible encourages us in Colossians 3:23:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

When kids learn to approach life wholeheartedly, they build resilience, courage, and a sense of purpose that lasts a lifetime.

How to Encourage Wholehearted Effort at Every Age

For Young Children (Ages 3–7):

• Celebrate Trying: Praise effort, not just results. When your child tries something new, cheer them on regardless of the outcome (“I’m so proud of you for trying!”).
• Model Enthusiasm: Show excitement about your own tasks and let your child see you working hard and enjoying the process.
• Make It Fun: Turn chores or challenges into games. Encourage them to finish what they start, even if it takes a few tries.

For Elementary Kids (Ages 8–12):

• Set Goals Together: Help your child set small, achievable goals and celebrate their progress. Remind them that mistakes are part of learning.
• Share Your Stories: Talk about times you had to try hard or didn’t succeed at first. Let them know everyone faces challenges.
• Encourage Perseverance: When your child feels like giving up, remind them that sticking with it is what makes them strong.

For Teens (Ages 13+):

• Discuss Motivation: Ask your teen what motivates them and how they feel when they give their best. Encourage them to pursue activities that ignite their passion.
• Emphasize Growth: Talk about the importance of learning from setbacks. Share examples of people who succeeded through perseverance.
• Connect to Faith: Discuss how giving their best is a way to honor God and themselves, regardless of what others think.

How Do You Motivate Your Kids to Try Their Best?

Every family is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some kids respond to encouragement, others to friendly competition, and others to having a supportive cheerleader by their side. The key is to remind them that their worth isn’t measured by perfection, but by their willingness to show up, try, and grow.

As Brené Brown’s Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto says:

“We will practice courage in our family by showing up, letting ourselves be seen, and honoring vulnerability. We will share our stories of struggle and strength. There will always be room in our home for both.”
