Memphis, TN – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) is actively recruiting new Correctional Deputies to serve in one of the most critical roles in our justice system. With 335 positions currently open, the department is calling on individuals ready to make a difference, build a long-term career, and help meet the growing need for dedicated public servants inside local correctional facilities.
“Working in corrections is not just a job-it’s a chance to serve, grow, and build a stable future,” said Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner. “We’re proud to offer the highest starting pay in the region for correctional officers, and unmatched opportunities for advancement, training, and college support.”
A Career That Starts Right After High School
Applicants only need a high school diploma or GED and must be at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license. Physical agility tests are not required to apply. There is also no residency requirement-applicants do not need to live in Shelby County to be eligible. With new higher wages, SCSO Correctional Deputies start above $48,000 annually, with earnings increasing to $62,020.80 annually after five years. Generous benefits include:
Many new recruits begin straight out of high school or after entry-level jobs in retail, customer service, or warehouses. “This career gave me financial freedom, self-discipline, and a path I’m proud of,” said a recent graduate of the SCSO Training Academy. “I can provide for my kids, pay off my house, and build a future.”
Serving Where It Matters Most
With an average 24,000 annual bookings, staffing remains critical. The SCSO’s team of Correctional Deputies plays a vital role in public safety, providing structure, supervision, and support to incarcerated individuals. Deputies describe the work as mentally challenging and emotionally rewarding-requiring communication, compassion, teamwork, and resilience.
“You really have to want to do this job,” one graduate said. “It’s not easy, but the impact you make is real. You’re helping people and building a better system from within.”
A Path to Grow and Lead
Many deputies use corrections as a stepping stone into law enforcement, special operations, or related careers in criminal justice. Whether someone plans to climb the ranks or earn a degree along the way, SCSO offers a launchpad for a meaningful future.
“If you’re ready to make a difference, serve your community, and grow personally and professionally-this is your opportunity,” said Buckner.
