Commissioner Erika Sugarmon honored Dr. Rosalyn Nichols during the Black History Month 2025 celebration, acknowledging her decades-long commitment to interfaith leadership, social justice advocacy, and community empowerment. The tribute highlighted Nichols's role as the founder of A More Excellent Way Incorporated, her involvement with the Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICA), and her dedication to serving as a transformative force within Memphis and beyond.

Dr. Rosalyn Nichols is a woman of many talents, seamlessly blending her roles as a pastor, advocate, educator, and community leader. Her journey began with a strong foundation in faith and a deep commitment to serving others.

She earned her Master of Divinity Summa Cum Laude from Memphis Theological Seminary in 1996 and later obtained a Doctor of Ministry degree from Virginia Union University in 2004.

Commissioner Sugarmon noted Nichols' academic accomplishments as testaments to her commitment to serve and understand others.

A More Excellent Way Incorporated

Following the tragic death of a childhood friend due to domestic violence, Dr. Nichols founded A More Excellent Way Incorporated, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting healthy relationships and eliminating relationship violence. This organization provides education, counseling, and support services to individuals and families affected by domestic violence, empowering them to break the cycle of abuse and build healthier relationships.

This organization shows her love for the community and the desire to see community members live in peace and with access to resources for bettering themselves.

A Leader in Interfaith Dialogue

Dr. Nichols is a founding member of the Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope (MICA), a diverse group of faith leaders working together to address social justice issues in the Memphis community. She also serves as the interfaith officer for the Metropolitan Interfaith Association, fostering collaboration and understanding among different faith traditions.

Commissioner Sugarmon noted that she is an individual who has dedicated her life to advocating for and assisting others. The work and community involvement highlight her dedication to Memphis.

Global Engagement

Dr. Nichols' influence extends far beyond the borders of Memphis. She has served as a visiting professor in Zimbabwe, engaged in church planting efforts in China, and participated in a pilgrimage following the steps of Jesus. A New Role at LeMoyne-Owen College

Dr. Nichols is now the Associate VP in the Office of Institutional Advancement at LeMoyne-Owen College (LOC)

Her connection with LeMoyne-Owen College is a return to her roots. As an HBCU Alum, LOC provided her with a strong foundation and education.

Her work with HBCUs allows her to help influence and educate the next generation. She has given so much to the Memphis community.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Nichols expressed her gratitude to Commissioner Sugarmon for the honor, acknowledging the influence of his mother and other women who have served as role models.

Commissioner Lowry:** Thanked Dr. Nichols for her continued service, noting the "lot of love for LOC today" and expressing his pride in "walking on your shoulders as well and following your footsteps." Commissioner Clay Bibbs: Thanked Dr. Nichols for "everything that you do for our community" and praised her work with the "best sorority that exists in the world." *Commissioner Thornton: Shared that her "love for organizing was really just catapulted after my trainings with Micah" and admired Nichols' "gentleness" and "calming spirit."

These comments highlight the widespread respect and admiration that Dr. Nichols has earned from her colleagues and the broader Memphis community.
