Commissioner Britney Thornton proudly honored Osie Lewis during the Black History Month 2025 celebration, recognizing his unwavering dedication to the Magnolia-Castalia communities and his tireless efforts to foster unity and empowerment among its residents. Although Mr. Lewis was unable to attend due to illness, his presence was deeply felt through his proxy, Roby Williams, who eloquently conveyed Lewis's commitment to community service. The tribute highlighted Lewis's role as a founding member of the Magnolia-Castalia Community Association and his dedication to uplifting the neighborhood where he was born and raised.

Rooted in Magnolia-Castalia

Osie Lewis's connection to the Magnolia-Castalia communities is deeply personal. Born and raised in Castalia Heights, he attended Magnolia Elementary School and found his footing within the neighborhood. As a paperboy, he developed strong relationships with families along his route, showcasing his "loquacious and bubbling personality." He was also a Boy Scout and played football and baseball for the Magnolia Eagles, further solidifying his ties to the community.

Commissioner Thornton emphasized Lewis's enduring connection to his roots, noting that "most people gain recognition and forget their origin, but not Osie." She highlighted that "his soul was anchored in Frazier, but his heart was and is always in the Magnolia-Castalia community, communities."

Building a Community Association

Lewis's commitment to the Magnolia-Castalia communities led him to become one of the founding members of the Magnolia-Castalia Community Association. In 2019, he wrote the mission and charter for the organization, establishing it as a 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to improving the lives of residents.

He also petitioned the city of Memphis to name the Magnolia-Castalia Community Center the Simon Boyd Center, after Simon Boyd and Ms. Harry May Simmons, the longest-serving principal of Magnolia Elementary School and Joe Boyd the football and baseball coach who inspired his life. These efforts demonstrate his dedication to honoring the history and legacy of the community.

A Champion for Unity

Lewis's work is centered on the idea of community unity. According to Roby Williams, Lewis believes that "community is having residents of a community acknowledge and recognize and appreciate their common unity." He added that Lewis uses this "common unity" to "organize it, get things done."

Williams described Lewis as a "very, very special champion" who accepts the award "with humility, gratitude, and honor and integrity carried." He also acknowledged Carolyn Goodwin, the co-organizer of the Magnolia Cascadia CDC, for her contributions to the community.

A Shining Example

Commissioner Thornton praised Lewis's dedication and commitment to making a positive difference in the community, stating that it "sets a shining example for others to follow and are nothing short of extraordinary." She added that Lewis has "definitely shown us the power of collective action and leaves a legacy of service and compassion that will continue to be remembered for years."

Commissioner Thornton acknowledged Roby Williams's own accomplishments, noting that he is "literally deserving of an honor in and of himself." She highlighted that Williams is the first African-American to work for the First Tennessee National Corporation and the former president of the Black Business Association. His role as Lewis's proxy further emphasized the strong bonds within the Magnolia-Castalia community.

Commissioner Lowry also praised Williams as a "great man" and a "giant in our community," further recognizing his contributions to Memphis.
