Anne Backus is a dedicated community leader and advocate, running as a Democratic candidate for the Tennessee House of Representatives in District 33. A retired project manager from the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Anne brings over three decades of experience in managing complex projects, emphasizing teamwork, budget adherence, and timely completion.

Born to a teacher and a chemical engineer, Anne was raised with a strong sense of community and service, values that have guided her throughout her life. She holds a degree in industrial engineering from Mississippi State University, which paved the way for her successful career and her ability to solve problems effectively and efficiently.

Since retiring in 2014, Anne has dedicated herself to various forms of community service, including her role as a volunteer for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of the Tennessee Heartland, where she advocates for abused and neglected children in the juvenile court system. Her volunteer work is a testament to her commitment to making a significant impact in the lives of the most vulnerable.

Anne is also an active member of her church and enjoys tutoring young people in math, helping them discover the joy and utility of the subject. Her engagement with the youth extends to her roles as a Girl Scout leader, band mom, classroom volunteer, and Sunday school teacher, all of which underline her commitment to education and community development.

Her campaign is built on the principles of honesty, transparency, and community service, reflecting the values of Anderson County. Anne aims to bring these values to the Tennessee House, focusing on creating effective solutions and policies that genuinely serve the people.

Anne is also a founder and co-chair of PFLAG’s Oak Ridge Chapter and a member of the Oak Ridge-Anderson County NAACP, roles that highlight her advocacy for social justice and equality. Her multifaceted approach to community involvement and her professional background make her a strong candidate who is deeply connected to the needs and aspirations of her constituents in District 33.
