Memphis, TN – Justice was delivered in Shelby County this week as a jury convicted Gaudencio Lopez on charges of Rape of a Child and two counts of Aggravated Sexual Battery after years of hidden abuse against two young family members.
The conviction stems from disturbing crimes that Lopez committed against his two minor relatives — one between the ages of 7 and 10, and her younger sister, abused between the ages of 6 and 7. For years, their trauma went unspoken until the youngest finally confided in her mother. Her bravery encouraged her older sister to also reveal the abuse.
During a difficult trial, both young survivors provided emotional testimony recounting the assaults. Their mother testified as well, detailing how she once trusted Lopez with her children during visits, only to later discover the truth about his repeated abuse. The jury also heard from Memphis Police Department Lt. Roderock Watson, who led the investigation that ultimately helped bring Lopez to justice.
The verdict brought a long-awaited sense of closure for the family. District Attorney Steve Mulroy praised the courage of the survivors and the persistence of his Special Victims Unit, saying:
“This guilty verdict means everything to these young survivors and their family. It delivers accountability and justice after years of silence. We are grateful for the tireless work of our Special Victims Unit prosecutors, whose dedication made this outcome possible.”
This case underscores a critical truth: the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office is not soft on crime, especially when it comes to crimes against children. Despite political narratives that sometimes suggest otherwise, DA Mulroy and his team have consistently demonstrated their commitment to seeking accountability for the most heinous offenses.
The successful prosecution in this case is a testament to the Special Victims Unit’s relentless pursuit of justice. Assistant District Attorney Robert Steele led the trial, supported by victim witness coordinators Jacqueline Chacon and Shanika Stone, and paralegal Magen Houston. Their combined effort ensured that the victims’ voices were heard and that the offender was held fully accountable.
For many in Memphis and Shelby County who are weary of crime and looking for evidence that offenders are being dealt with firmly, this conviction is yet another example that the justice system is working. Beyond the courtroom, it also sends a powerful message: those who commit crimes against our most vulnerable will face consequences.
The verdict not only delivers justice for two young survivors but also affirms the broader truth that Memphis is not turning a blind eye to violent crime. The DA’s office continues to stand firm, proving that child predators, and all offenders who cause severe harm, will meet the full weight of the law.
