44 Huling Ave Memphis, TN 38103

Starts at $30

Overview: Contemporary Dance Performance & Party!

The Secret World of Jack Robinson, a contemporary dance concert exploring the eccentric life and astounding work of the famed New York based photographer, who had over 500 images in the pages of Vogue. In this performance party, the dancers will unearth Jack’s long-hidden images from the ‘60s and ‘70s, which include celebrity icons like Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ralph Lauren, Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner and Elton John. Robinson’s stained- glass serves as inspiration for the dancers as well, as he moved to Memphis later in his career and designed the stained-glass windows for the chapel at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The performance celebrating his life and work is at the Jack Robinson Gallery, located in downtown Memphis at 44 S. Huling.

Participants will be led by a guide through four areas of the gallery and will be seated to view the dances. An elevator is available for 2nd floor access. The performance dates are April 8 and 9, with 3 shows each night, at 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm. The gallery and bar will be open 30 minutes prior to and after each show time.

Be transported to Tennessee Ballet Theater’s The Secret World of Jack Robinson, a dance concert directed by Erin Walter and McKenzie Day. Explore the Jack Robinson Gallery, located in Dan Oppenheimer’s eclectic downtown warehouse, as dancers breathe life into Robinson’s photographs. His images from Vogue awaken as a line of dancers in flowing skirts wash over the hardwood floor like waves. Dancers in a New York City jazz club glimmer in the night in one room, and soloists embody the photos and music of pop-culture icons in another. An ensemble of dancers in vibrant hues form tableaux reminiscent of Jack’s colorful stained-glass windows. Memphis choreographers Lauren Stallings, Rachael Arnwine, Steven Prince Tate, Alyssa Abbas and guest choreographer Eboné Amos premier original works for the concert.

Select Jack Robinson photos will be offered before and after each show at a special event price, with all proceeds donated by curators Dan and Susan Oppenheimer to the Frayser Dance Project, Tennessee Ballet Theater’s outreach program. Alliance Healthcare has agreed to match donations collected at the events, up to a total of $5,000.
