Meet the Candidate: Judge Ray Lepone – Experience, Integrity, and Proven Work on the Bench
Meet The Candidates | August 03, 2026
Former Golden Gloves boxer and veteran trial lawyer Judge Ray Lepone brings hands-on experience, proven fairness, and a heart for youth to Division 1.

In an era of campaign slogans, polished promises, and hyper-partisan soundbites, Judge Ray Lepone offers a simple, refreshing alternative to the voters of Shelby County: check the record.

Unlike candidates asking voters for a leap of faith, Lepone is already doing the work. Appointed to the Criminal Court District Division 1 bench after navigating an extraordinarily rigorous vetting process by the state—diving into his entire life background, professional standing, and public record—he didn’t just step into the role; he hit the ground running.

With nearly three decades of legal experience in public service and private practice, Lepone brings a rare, comprehensive view of the justice system to Division 1. He is a seasoned voice on the bench whose career reflects an unwavering commitment to fairness, judicial integrity, and community uplift.

Proven Leadership and Action on the Bench

When addressing the critical issues facing Shelby County’s courts—such as severe case backlogs and lengthy disposition times—Judge Lepone doesn't offer theoretical solutions. He applies practical, decisive action.

"As a judge, the way you address the backlog is having a judge with a deep knowledge of the law who can rule quickly," Lepone explains. "If I can get someone out of jail appropriately, I do it that day. I move cases quickly, and I’m quick to rule on matters that require prompt decisions."

The Campaign in Pictures

"I’ve actually been in the neighborhoods where most people don't go, in the homes of people who lost loved ones to violence," says Lepone. "When you put the robe on, you have to set aside personal opinions, follow the law, and respect the integrity of the position. Every person who comes into my courtroom is treated with dignity and respect as a human being."

A Champion for Shelby County’s Youth

Beyond the courtroom walls, Judge Lepone’s dedication to the community takes a hands-on, highly personal form: amateur boxing mentorship.

A former Golden Gloves fighter and licensed corner man, "Coach Ray" has spent years building and supporting local amateur boxing programs for youth in rough areas—often paying out-of-pocket for uniforms, travel, and tournament fees.

The Power of Mentorship
"When kids get into the ring, they're by themselves. They learn to believe in themselves and build the fortitude to endure hard things. That discipline transfers directly to life."
Judge Ray Lepone

Having spent years in the Multi-Agency Gang Unit working with young individuals, Lepone refused to grow cynical. Instead, he channeled his background into structured athletics, teaming up with local figures like former pro fighter Mike Cook to offer teenagers an outlet built on discipline, self-worth, and accountability.

The Choice for Division 1

When voters head to the polls for Criminal Court District Division 1, Judge Ray Lepone asks them to evaluate what truly matters on the bench: proven competence, hands-on experience, and demonstrated judicial temperament.
