The Entrepreneur of Orange Mound: Samuel Nelson’s Blueprint to Rebuild District 10 Through "Economic Anchors"
Meet The Candidates | April 14, 2026
From selling material to pay for college to managing 600 therapists nationwide, Samuel Nelson is bringing an "entertainment and trade" vision to Shelby County.

Samuel Nelson doesn’t just walk through the raindrops; he understands the ecosystem that creates the storm. As a candidate for Shelby County Commission District 10, Nelson isn't coming to the table with a standard political resume—he’s coming with a profit-and-loss statement and a vision for "Economic Anchors" that Memphis hasn’t seen in decades.

Growing up in Orange Mound, Nelson remembers the vibrancy of the Cherokee Bowling Alley and the iconic "Giant Shoe" on Stride Right. These weren't just landmarks; they were economic engines that drew 600 people a weekend into the district to spend money, eat, and shop. "We need to replicate that throughout the district," Nelson says. "People want to be entertained. How do we make this a safe place to bring people to vacation? Barbecue is great, but we need anchors that keep people here."

One of Nelson's most ambitious ideas involves the Mid-South Coliseum. While others debate its fate, Nelson sees a "Jillian’s-style" entertainment hub—a one-stop shop for movies, bowling, and dining that serves as a catalyst for local trade. This ties directly into his slogan: "Colleges for Knowledge, and Trades will get you Paid." Nelson’s business acumen is undeniable. He is the founder of Massage MOTG, a corporate wellness platform he describes as the "Uber of Healthcare," managing a database of over 600 licensed therapists across the U.S. He’s a leader who understands technology, scaling, and the necessity of cash flow. He wants to apply this "ecosystem" thinking to the district's blight and housing crisis.

"We need to hire the roofing companies within the district to fix the schools in the district," Nelson explains. "That’s how you cycle the money back around. That’s how you get people to believe in the government again."

Beyond the balance sheets, Nelson is a man of faith who teaches Bible studies using the language of modern youth—PlayStation, Xbox, and Roblox—to engage over 100 kids at a time. He bridges the gap between ancient principles and modern trades, teaching that even the disciples were generational business owners.

For Samuel Nelson, running for District 10 isn't about the title of "Commissioner." It’s about being a "listening leader" who understands that for a community to thrive, it must be safe, it must be entertained, and above all, it must be invested in itself.
