The Fight for the Soul of Our Schools: Damon Curry Morris is Angry, and He Thinks You Should Be Too.
Business 101 | April 13, 2026
With 75% of MSES students reading below grade level, 30-year advocate Damon Curry Morris is running to restore hope, accountability, and a student-centered focus to the School Board.

Damon Curry Morris did not want to run for office again. But when several current and retired teachers sat him down and asked him to "stand in the gap" for District 9, he couldn't say no. For Morris, a 30-year veteran of Memphis advocacy whose family legacy in education spans nearly a century, the current state of Memphis-Shelby County Schools is personal. And it makes him angry.

"I was listening at the candidate forum," Morris says. "It angered me to hear incumbents who have served two full terms just now talking about transparency. A lot of this happened under their watch."

Morris points to a staggering statistic that he feels is being drowned out by adult political drama: 75% to 76% of MSCS students are reading below their grade level. To Morris, this is not just a failure of policy; it is a profound failure of leadership. He witnessed the "hope" and "soul" leave the district following the controversial departure of Dr. Fagan, and he sees the results every day as he works with students, including a homeless student at Melrose High.

His critique isn't theoretical. Morris himself holds a 96.7% graduation rate from his tenure at the legendary (though unchartered) Teen Town University. He knows the "formula" for success, and he sees it being ignored. "How do you sit in a CCTE class an entire year without the materials you need?" he demands, sharing stories of a culinary student at Sheffield without ovens and a cyber-security class at Hamilton with no equipment.

Morris is running on a platform of "Student-Centered Focus," arguing that every decision made by the board must prioritize the "complete student." He intends to fight for competitive salaries across the board—from teachers to plant managers—to retain the best talent.

"Education is in my bones," Morris concludes. "My grandmother taught for 43 years, through integration. My family has spent over 40 years in pre-K. We cannot continue to hide these things or wait any longer. The time to be loud and deal with it is now."
