The Work Before the Title: Why District 8 Trusts Will Richardson
Local & National News | April 13, 2026
From Frayser to South Memphis, Will Richardson has spent six years "standing in the gap" for neighbors long before seeking a Commission seat.

For Will Richardson, the upcoming Election Day on May 5th isn't the start of his service to District 8—it’s a continuation of a six-year track record. A native of the 38127 zip code and a graduate of Central High, Richardson has built a reputation as the man who "stands in the gap" when government resources fall short.

"I’ve been doing the real, hard work in our communities," Richardson says. "Whether it’s providing laptops to seniors in Frasier or feeding families when SNAP benefits were delayed during the holidays, I’ve been here. I didn't wait for an election cycle to care about District 8."

Richardson’s platform is rooted in the harsh realities of the district’s economic landscape. He points to 38126 as the most impoverished zip code in the county, with an average income of just $17,000, and 38127 as the most violent. His approach to these issues is holistic: he advocates for increased mental health resources for youth facing trauma, maternal health initiatives to combat Frasier's high infant mortality rate, and a heavy focus on entrepreneurship and workforce development.

Unlike many who move into a district specifically to run for office, Richardson emphasizes his lifelong connection to the area. Aside from his time in the military, his roots have remained firmly planted in Memphis soil. This deep history has allowed him to build a "predestined" level of trust with local nonprofits, churches, and residents.

"Our community knows that where there’s a Will, there’s a way," Richardson says. "They’ve seen the results. They’ve seen the partnerships. In this season, District 8 needs a leader who is battle-tested and ready to turn community needs into passed legislation on day one."
