In the complex landscape of the Shelby County Criminal Court, the bench requires more than just a legal mind—it requires a veteran who has seen the system from every angle. Judge Raymond "Ray" Lepone brings exactly that. Recently appointed by Governor Bill Lee to the 30th Judicial District Criminal Court (Division I), Judge Lepone has spent over two decades fighting for the safety and integrity of the Memphis community.

From his early days as a young prosecutor to his current role as a Criminal Court Judge, Ray Lepone’s career is a testament to his belief that the law is a calling, not just a career.

A Career Forged in the Courtroom

Judge Lepone is no stranger to "201 Poplar." He began his journey in the building in 2000 as an Assistant District Attorney and quickly rose through the ranks. Over 25 years, he tried more than 60 jury trials, including some of the most high-profile cases in Memphis history.

His leadership extended beyond the trial floor:

• Multi-Agency Gang Unit (MGU): Led collaborative efforts to target violent crime and street gangs.
• Deputy District Attorney General: Managed day-to-day operations for an office of over 200 employees, ensuring ethical justice.
• Assistant Attorney General: Served in the Criminal Appeals Division, providing a high-level perspective on trial court decisions.

From Magistrate to the Criminal Bench

While known for his deep prosecutorial background, Judge Lepone developed a vital judicial temperament during his time as a Magistrate Judge in Shelby County Juvenile Court (2016–2018). Presiding over cases involving delinquency and child safety, he learned the importance of balance, patience, and the human impact of a judge’s ruling.

"The experience I had on the bench gave me a snapshot of myself that led me to feel confident that I could sit on a courtroom bench," Judge Lepone shared. "It’s about making difficult decisions and finding the path toward justice."

A Personal Mission of Safety

Today, that mission continues from the bench. His priorities for Division I are clear:

1. Eliminating Case Backlogs: Moving dockets efficiently to ensure timely resolutions.
2. Upholding the Rule of Law: Applying Tennessee statutes fairly and consistently.
3. Commitment to Integrity: Maintaining a courtroom that respects victims, defendants, and the community alike.

A Champion for Our Future

Beyond the robe, Ray Lepone is a mentor and a coach. As an amateur boxing coach with the USA Boxing Association, he works directly with local youth, teaching discipline and perseverance. He believes that a safer Memphis starts with both accountability in the courtroom and investment in our neighborhoods.
