Have you ever had to wear a dress that looked like a neon cupcake? Have you ever had to tackle a distant cousin to catch a bouquet? Have you ever looked at your best friend and promised, "I’ll be there for you, no matter what"?

If you answered yes to any of these, Theatre Memphis has the perfect antidote to the post-holiday blues. Running January 23 – February 8, 2026, in the intimate Next Stage, Always a Bridesmaid is the hilarious Southern romp you and your girlfriends have been waiting for.

A Pinky Promise That Lasted 30 Years

Written by the comedic geniuses Jones Hope Wooten, this play follows four high school friends who made a solemn vow on prom night: to be bridesmaids in each other’s weddings... no matter how old they are or how many times they walk down the aisle.

Flash forward 30 years, and these Southern gals are still at it. From "what if" romances to the pressures of the big day, this show proves that while husbands come and go, true friendship is forever.

The Golden Girls Connection

If the banter feels familiar, there is a reason! Director Anita “Jo” Lenhart reveals the secret sauce behind the script:

“The play was written by the same legendary team who wrote every single Golden Girls episode that all capitalize on camaraderie and friendship among four long-time friends. Amidst the very real pressures of a wedding day, the situational hijinks in this show add up to frothy fun and heart-warming laughs.”

Imagine the wit of Dorothy, the charm of Blanche, and the heart of Rose, but set right on the Theatre Memphis stage.

More Than Just Jokes

While you will definitely be laughing at the "world's ugliest bridesmaid dress," the heart of this show is the bond between the characters.

Assistant Director Elizabeth Perkins notes, “I love how the laughter grows directly out of characters who truly care about each other. I’m also thrilled by this cast: their chemistry, fearless comedy, and sincerity make the whole thing sparkle.”

Theatre Memphis Executive Producer Debbie Litch agrees, calling the show a testament to "chosen family." It is a reminder that seeing our friendships survive the years—and the fashion choices—is life’s greatest joy.
