A County Comes Together In a meeting heavy with the burdens of public policy, debate, and tough decisions, the Shelby County Commission paused at key moments to unite around achievements, gratitude, and hope. Amidst legislative hurdles and passionate advocacy, the meeting’s recognitions sparkled as reminders of what binds a community together: respect, gratitude, and shared celebration.
Chaplain of the Day: Spiritual Strength for Public Service The session began with an invocation from Apostle Cedric Taylor, recognized officially as the "Chaplain of the Day." His earnest words and heartfelt prayer asked for wisdom, unity, and effective leadership: “Father, give [the commission] strength, discernment, wisdom, and guide them through every topic today… that viable solutions that work for the citizens are going to be had because we’ve asked you to step in.” Later, Apostle Taylor was awarded a special recognition for his commitment to uplifting both the commissioners and the broader community—a moving moment that set a collegial and hopeful tone for all that followed.
Tennessee Teacher of the Year: Educator Excellence on Center Stage Few moments brought more applause or pride than the recognition of Dr. Brandy Blake Dela Cruz, of Collierville High School, as 2025–26 Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Surrounded by colleagues, students, and school leaders, Dr. Dela Cruz was celebrated for her innovation, passion for math education, and the historic nature of her honor: “Dr. Dela Cruz is the first district teacher to be named Tennessee Teacher of the Year, a historic milestone… She inspires passion, dedication, and excellence, representing the very best in education.” In her acceptance, Dr. Dela Cruz thanked the community and declared Memphis “home,” promising to represent the county with pride. Her story is a beacon for students and educators alike, inspiring others to “make this place a community, a family” and committing to excellence for all.
Raising Awareness: Hunter Syndrome The commission moved from education to compassion, designating the third week of October as Hunter Syndrome Awareness Week. This resolution brought rare disease to the fore—highlighting one of Shelby County’s most vulnerable communities. “Hunter Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder… Early diagnosis and intervention are critical. Today, we unite behind those families, advocating for research and resources.” The segment concluded with emotional thanks from a parent, speaking for all Hunter Syndrome families: “Thank you for making our voices heard.”
Birthdays and Personal Touches: Recognizing Service and Life Before diving into the policy-heavy agenda, the commission celebrated its own—recognizing staff birthdays, including Cecia Nichols and Victor Anderson. These seemingly small gestures foster connection, reminding all present that every public servant is also a neighbor, a friend, a human being.
Why These Moments Matter Amid divisive debates on budgets, justice, and community safety, these celebrations stand as essential acts of unity. They:
There’s Always Room to Celebrate No matter how weighty the issues or how heated the debate, the October Shelby County Commission meeting proved that there’s always room to celebrate what’s good in our community. From classrooms to courthouses, to the birthday candles on a staff cake, unity is forged in gratitude. In honoring the very best, Shelby County is reminded that, together, achievement and service carry the day—and light the path forward for all.
