Recognizing that college isn’t the only path, Will is a major advocate for expanding trade programs and certification opportunities in Memphis.

Written By JR Robinson

Will Richardson believes the future of Memphis hinges on how we invest in our young people today—and he’s got a plan to make sure every student in District 8 has real options for success. As Will likes to say, “Where there is a Will, there’s a Way”—and that starts with education that actually works for every kid.

Memphis and Shelby County schools have faced some tough numbers in recent years. In 2023, less than 30% of third graders in Shelby County Schools met literacy goals. Will sees this as an urgent call to action: “If our kids can’t read with understanding by third grade, we’re setting them up for struggle.” That’s why he’s all in for early Pre-K investments, stronger reading and comprehension programs, and making sure teachers get the resources they need.

But it’s not just about test scores. Will wants to bring conflict resolution and life skills into classrooms from an early age—teaching kids how to handle real challenges without resorting to violence. “If we teach our youth how to manage conflict, we prevent problems before they start,” Will says.

Recognizing that college isn’t the only path, Will is a major advocate for expanding trade programs and certification opportunities in Memphis. With youth unemployment in the region hovering around 17% and many small businesses struggling to find skilled workers, he sees opening up pathways to trades, certifications, and internships as a win-win. “When our youth graduate high school with skills—plumbing, mechanics, healthcare, even entrepreneurship—they don’t just find a job, they find a purpose.”

Will plans to push for stronger partnerships between schools and local businesses, holding companies accountable for hiring local and offering internships. He believes this directly boosts economic mobility and reduces crime, giving Memphis youth a reason to stay and build their futures here.
