As we celebrate Women's History Month, I want to take a moment to honor an extraordinary leader who has been a beacon of hope and change in Memphis: Britney Thornton. Watching her journey over the past six years has been nothing short of inspiring. Britney embodies what true leadership looks like—selfless, passionate, and deeply committed to ensuring every citizen has the opportunity to thrive.

Community Work Before Office

Britney Thornton’s story begins in the heart of Memphis, where she was born and raised in Historic Orange Mound. Her dedication to her community started long before she entered politics. After graduating from Baylor University with a degree in Social Work and earning her Master’s in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania, Britney returned home with a mission to make a difference.

In 2016, Britney founded JUICE Orange Mound, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering residents through grassroots initiatives. Under her leadership, JUICE mobilized the community to invest over $12,200 in spare change to fund local projects. Her innovative “change for change” model proved that collective action could transform neighborhoods. JUICE Orange Mound became a shining example of what can happen when residents are given the tools and encouragement to invest in their own communities.

JUICE Orange Mound's work extends to addressing critical issues like homelessness within the community, striving to eradicate it one step at a time. This is particularly important in light of rising property values that can lead to vulnerable housing situations. The closing of local shelters further exacerbates the problem, leaving many without essential resources.

Britney's work didn’t stop there. She served as a middle school educator at KIPP Memphis Public Schools, where she not only taught but also took on leadership roles as Department Chair. Later, she worked as a K-5 Math Interventionist at STAR Academy College Preparatory Charter School while continuing to grow JUICE Orange Mound. Her ability to juggle multiple roles while maintaining her focus on community-building showcased her relentless drive and commitment.

Journey into Politics

Britney’s transition into politics was fueled by her desire to create systemic change. In August 2022, she made history as the youngest Shelby County Commissioner ever elected, representing District 10. Her campaign was rooted in grassroots organizing and focused on issues like housing, transit, and economic development—areas she had already been addressing through her community work.

As a first-time candidate, Britney faced challenges that would have deterred many others. But her authenticity, innovative ideas, and deep connection with the community resonated with voters. She proved that genuine passion for people could overcome traditional barriers in politics.

Accomplishments While in Office

Since taking office, Commissioner Thornton has continued to make an impact.

Investing in Orange Mound

Britney secured $2.7 million from the Shelby County Board of Commissioners specifically for the Orange Mound community. This substantial investment reflects her ability to advocate for her district's needs and secure the resources necessary for meaningful change.

Addressing Systemic Issues

Britney's commitment to her community is a 24-hour focus. Because she listens and experiences the needs of her district firsthand, she is able to act decisively. She is addressing multiple key areas:

• Equitable Pay: Inspired by the advocacy of her niece, Britney is a strong advocate for equitable pay for all Shelby County workers.
• Minority Business Spin: Recognizing the vast disparity in county business contracts, where minority businesses receive less than 1% of the spin, Britney is actively fighting to increase opportunities for minority-owned businesses.
• Pendleton Place Apartments: Britney's dedication to improving living conditions at Pendleton Place Apartments is a testament to her hands-on approach to community issues. Life safety and capital improvements were made to the complex, including new roofs, new siding, new HVAC systems, plumbing, sewer and electrical upgrades, and ADA accessible improvements. Additionally, building upgrades included new lighting, windows, energy efficiency upgrades, and enhanced security features such as gated entrances. In a bold move to advocate for residents and speed up red tape that had slowed progress on these improvements, Britney went on Facebook Live while staying on-location with residents. This allowed her to experience firsthand their living conditions and use her platform to amplify their voices.
• Housing and Transit: Her focus on housing has led her to advocate for affordable housing solutions and equitable development within District 10. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that transit systems are accessible and efficient for all residents while promoting economic opportunities that uplift underserved communities.

Britney’s leadership extends beyond policy initiatives. She has hosted numerous community events, such as the Melrose Golden Wildcats watch party during their historic championship game appearance. These events reflect her commitment to fostering unity and pride within her district.

As Chairwoman of Education and Vice Chairwoman of Community Enhancement Grants and Legislative Affairs committees, Britney has used her platform to amplify voices often overlooked in government decision-making processes. Her ability to connect with constituents on a personal level continues to set her apart as a leader who truly understands the needs of her community.

Lessons for Young Women

Britney Thornton’s journey offers invaluable lessons for young women aspiring to lead:

• Start Where You Are: Britney didn’t wait for an official title to make an impact—she began serving her community right out of college.
• Be Relentless: Whether it was knocking on doors or mobilizing residents for JUICE Orange Mound, Britney showed that hard work and persistence pay off.
• Lead Authentically: Britney’s genuine passion for people has always been at the core of her work. She leads with empathy and integrity.
• Think Creatively: From JUICE’s “change for change” model to innovative policy ideas, Britney demonstrates the power of thinking outside the box.
• Mentor Others: Britney has inspired countless young people—including my own 16-year-old daughter—to believe in their ability to create change.

A Personal Tribute

As someone who has followed Britney’s journey closely through JustMyMemphis over the years, I can say without hesitation that she is one of the most remarkable leaders Memphis has ever seen. My daughter has had the privilege of working alongside Britney during video shoots, and she looks up to her as both a mentor and role model. Britney’s passion for ensuring every citizen wins is something I deeply admire—not just as a journalist but as a father who wants his child to grow up believing in the power of leadership.

Britney Thornton is more than a politician; she is a movement—a force for good that challenges systems of oppression while empowering others to rise above them. She reminds us all that leadership isn’t about titles or positions—it’s about heart, vision, and action.
