In Shelby County, Tennessee, the Memphis Extended Stay hotel located at 4300 American Way has been declared a public nuisance and subsequently closed by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office. This action follows an extensive investigation by the Memphis Police Department (MPD), which revealed a high volume of criminal activity linked to the property. Between August 13, 2022, and September 3, 2024, the MPD responded to nearly 800 disturbance calls at the hotel, including three homicides, three "death on arrival" calls, 11 overdoses, and several armed robberies and aggravated assaults.

Investigation and Closure

The investigation intensified in August 2024 when Crime Stoppers tips indicated that illegal narcotics were being sold in multiple rooms at the hotel, with some reports suggesting employee involvement. The MPD's thorough investigation provided sufficient evidence for the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office to present the case to a judge. The judge ruled the hotel a public nuisance, leading to its closure. During this process, several arrests were made, and a significant amount of drugs was confiscated. Details regarding the seized substances will be released following forensic testing.

District Attorney Mulroy emphasized that this closure is a clear message that properties facilitating criminal activities will not be tolerated. The DA's office is committed to collaborating with law enforcement to hold such establishments accountable.
