Corey Strong is an attorney, education leader, naval officer, and civic change agent from Memphis. He is a proven advocate, professional, and leader that is qualified to put Memphis and the 9th district back on the map.
Corey, a Captain(sel) in the Navy, has spent 20 years of his life serving his country and mentoring and growing young leaders worldwide. He served on active duty for 8 years and has deployed to the Persian Gulf, the Pacific Rim, South America, with two tours in Afghanistan. He left active duty in 2011 and continues to serve in the Naval Reserves, currently as the Deputy Chief of Staff of NR CNE/CNA N3 in Atlanta supporting Naval Forces Europe and Sixth Fleet headquartered in Naples, Italy.
After returning from a year in Afghanistan in 2016, Corey focused his career service on the field of education where he has held leadership roles for Memphis Shelby County Schools, Freedom Preparatory Academy, Progeny Place, and most recently at First 8 Memphis as the Director of Programs and Partnership. His roles have spanned the entire spectrum of education including literacy in early childhood, school finance and improvement, facilities and technology transformation, and workforce training.
He is a former member of the TN State Democratic Executive Committee and Chairman of the Shelby County Democratic Party. As Chairman, he restored function and authority to the County Party and Democrats experienced their most successful local election in history by winning all 10 county wide elections and increasing their seats on County Commission from 7 to 8.
While proudly serving abroad in the Navy reserves for the past 13 years, Corey remains active in his local community. He is a member of Cumming Street Baptist Church, helped mentor local businesses with the United Way, and serves as the Treasurer on the board of Restore Corps- an organization dedicated to supporting victims of human trafficking.
Corey holds a B.S. from the United States Naval Academy, an MBA from San Diego State University, a J.D. from the University of Memphis, and a M.A. in Education Leadership from the Broad Center, now at the Yale School of Management.
